TillWell is a full-service funeral home and aquamation provider committed to sustainable and compassionate end-of-life care. As a certified B Corporation, TillWell prioritizes eco-conscious solutions, including alkaline hydrolysis (aquamation), an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cremation and burial. This process significantly reduces carbon emissions, eliminates harmful pollutants, and preserves natural resources. Despite regulatory challenges, Tillwell has now secured necessary approvals & licencing for both human and animal remains processing.
Mission Statement
Honour the Past | Preserve the Future | Funeral Care with the Future in Mind
Tillwell is a full-service funeral home and aquamation service reimagining end-of-life care with empathy, purpose, and sustainability. At Tillwell, we are committed to pursuing environmental initiatives that honour both the memory of loved ones and the preservation of our planet. We are proud to partner with organizations like Tree Canada to make eco-conscious choices accessible for memorial services and our adoption of alkaline hydrolysis, or aquamation, offers solace during loss while aligning with our growing awareness of the need for sustainability.
A Gentle Approach to Our Planet: The Ecological Benefits of Alkaline Hydrolysis Alkaline hydrolysis, also known as aquamation or water cremation, is an environmentally friendly funeral option that cares for our world. In times of grief, it's comforting to know we can make sustainable choices that reflect our love for those we've lost and our shared natural world.
Losing a loved one is incredibly painful. At Tillwell, we aim to guide you through this deeply personal process with compassion and care. Our goal is to provide support now while also building a brighter future together.
As a social enterprise, we contribute to environmental and social causes. We also adopt sustainable technologies like alkaline hydrolysis (aquamation) to reduce the environmental footprint typically associated with funeral services. Rather than rely on outdated models, we choose optimism through meaningful action.
Reduced Carbon Footprint Traditional cremation and burial methods can have significant environmental impacts. For example, flame-based cremation produces over 500 lbs of carbon and requires 28 gallons of fuel per use. In contrast, alkaline hydrolysis, or aquamation, produces just 1/10 the carbon footprint and operates without fossil fuels. Consequently, choosing aquamation eliminates the need for fossil fuels and minimizes our carbon footprint, thereby contributing to preserving the planet for future generations.
No Harmful Emissions Flame-based cremation releases harmful pollutants like mercury and dioxins into the air. However, alkaline hydrolysis, or aquamation, utilizes a gentle process involving water and alkali salts that produces no harmful emissions. By selecting this method, we contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for ourselves and our loved ones.
Preservation of Natural Resources Moreover, traditional burial practices consume valuable land and resources. On the other hand, aquamation is a space-saving and resource-efficient alternative. The remaining sterile liquid safely returns to the water cycle, while the small amount of bone ash can be scattered, buried, or kept in an urn - just like traditional cremains.
Biodegradable and Non-Toxic The aquamation process uses a combination of gentle water flow, heat, and an alkaline solution to break down the body's organic components. As a result, this process creates a sterile and nutrient-rich liquid that can be safely returned to the ecosystem. The result is a biodegradable and non-toxic option that respects the natural cycle of life.
